Jesse Owens had just congratulated Lutz Long, whom with a jump of 7,87 had given Adolph Hitler hope of seeing a German beting this upstart black man. Owens hit the plank perfectly, and hit the sand at 8,06. A new olympic record. Hitler was visibly annoyed.
Film photographer Leni Riefenstahl wanted the jump in slow motion, so Owens lined up again. The crew had not raked the sand when Owens landed in his own steps. 8,06 a second time. Owens made a clean sweep, winning the 100 meter dash, the 200 meter dash, the long jump and the 400 meter relay; matching the world record in the 100 meters and setting new ones in the other events.
At the end of the games, Owens became the first and only black man in history awarded the official Nazi party swastika by Hitler himself.
